Yesterday evening I went to my reading group where we discussed the novel of the early part of Charles Causley’s life. Mother’s Boy by Patrick Gale. A fascinating snap shot of life lived in the first half of the 20th century. But what really took us on, thanks to smart phones and second hand bookshops, was looking at some of his more well known poems. A couple that are definitely worth looking at are Ballad of the Breadman and Timothy Winters. The Ballad of the Breadman is a retelling of the Christmas story, and Timothy Winters a poem of poverty, and the failure of the systems meant to help. It is so wonderful that there is still so much to discover in our rather distressed and broken world. Definitely worth an explore.
