Mike and Chris have been walking Hadrian’s wall. Over the first three days the weather was remarkable, the views far reaching. Then on the fourth morning, the mist was down and I thought, what a shame, they won’t get the panoramas. But oh, my, it was so beautiful. Total silence, just the odd bird and this path disappearing up into the clouds. That dampening of sound that only mist and snow brings. No sky, but a different perspective on beauty and landscape, and what you see, what you hear. Like the cobweb! Would not have noticed it in bright sunshine. And then, as they disappeared, who knew what they might spot on the edge of the mist, what they might hear in this ancient and deeply rooted landscape?
